If you live here, the trick isn't finding something to do. It's timing your week so you're not stuck behind pavilion traffic when you were just trying to get home from Hannaford.

The one week when everything peaks at once
Most towns get a slow late-August fade. Gilford gets a compression. The final weekend of the month stacks the biggest single event of the summer, a two-night concert run, and the last full week of the state beach's staffed season into roughly seventy-two hours. That's the frame worth planning around.
Here's what makes that week different from mid-July: Gunstock's Adventure Park has already dropped to a Thursday-through-Sunday schedule, open through August 30, 2026 from 10am to 4pm, then weekends only through November 1. Ellacoya's staffed beach hours are winding toward the September shoulder. And BankNH Pavilion books its heaviest end-of-month bill of the year. Gates typically open earlier than posted showtime, and the pavilion opens parking lots hours early. That means the traffic curve on show days starts mid-afternoon, not at 6. On a back-to-back like the Zach Top nights closing out the month, plan grocery runs and errands for the morning.
Tailgating gets misunderstood every year by newer residents. The venue itself allows it, but the possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages in the parking areas actually violates a local Gilford ordinance. That's a town rule, not a Live Nation rule, and it's the one that surprises out-of-town friends most often.
One local detail that's easy to miss: the on-site ice cream stand is Sawyer's, a local favorite since 1945, serving its homemade ice cream to concertgoers all summer. If you can't get pavilion tickets, you can still get the same Sawyer's at their Lake Shore Road stand.
Gunstock is on its shorter clock now
The Adventure Park is running Thursday through Sunday until August 30, and after that it flips to weekends only. If you have kids home from camp or visiting cousins, the window is narrower than most families realize.
What's actually up there right now, in specifics: Gunstock offers one of the longest zipline networks in the continental United States at 1.6 miles total, with guides letting guests control their own speed up to 70 miles per hour. The aerial course is not a single ropes route. It's eight high-ropes courses with 81 challenge features including log ladders, bridges, swings, seesaws, and ziplines, each course increasing in difficulty and height, plus an Explorer Course for children ages 6 to 11.
The height and weight rules catch a lot of families off guard. For the adult Aerial Treetop Adventure, participants must be at least 12 years old, able to reach 5 feet 11 inches with feet flat on the ground, weigh less than 250 pounds, and children 12 and 13 need adult supervision in the trees. If your twelve-year-old is on the shorter side, that reach requirement is the one that ends the trip at the check-in desk. Take a broomstick and a measuring tape before you drive up.
Two operational quirks worth knowing. First, Gunstock has moved to a cashless payment system, so bring a debit or credit card. Second, if you've bought tickets for a specific day and the forecast turns, you have a narrow escape hatch: 48 hours or more prior to your scheduled Adventure you may move it to another date, but cancellations less than 48 hours prior get no refunds, rescheduling, or vouchers. On a rainy August Wednesday, that 48-hour line is what separates a family that reschedules from a family that eats the cost.
Ellacoya, and why the middle of the week is the answer
Ellacoya State Park is the beach that doesn't need a hotel key. Two hundred sixty-six Scenic Drive, the same address you've been driving past for years. What's changed for August is not the beach. It's the crowd curve.

- Southwest shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, with 600 feet of sandy beach and views across to the Sandwich and Ossipee mountains

- No tents at the RV park, and pets are not permitted in the park
- Bring a card or check; when the booth is unstaffed later in the season, payment goes in the Iron Ranger self-serve paystation, with checks payable to Treasurer, State of NH
The local's move in August is midweek. On any sunny Saturday, Ellacoya fills up fast, and once full, attendants have to refuse additional visitors for safety reasons. Weekday afternoons, especially after a pavilion show night when everyone is sleeping in, are the quiet stretch. If your work-from-home Thursday has a two-hour gap, that's your beach window, not the Saturday you were saving.
One more thing residents forget: the park has a bookable pavilion. The group-use pavilion overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee with a view of the Ossipee range, holds up to 100 people, and rents for $500. That's a serious option for a family birthday or an end-of-summer gathering that outgrows a backyard.
Where to actually eat around the pavilion nights
The dinner problem in Gilford on a show night is not lack of options. It's that everyone lands in the same three parking lots at 5:15.
If you want to be walking distance to the pavilion without dealing with pavilion pricing, Patrick's Pub & Eatery at 18 Weirs Road is the anchor. It's been recognized as Restaurant of the Year by the NH Restaurant Association, along with the National Restaurant Association's Good Neighbor Award and the Belknap County Economic Development Council's Corporate Soul Award. Weekend hours are Fri and Sat noon to 10 PM, Sun noon to 9 PM, so a 5:00 seating leaves plenty of runway for a 7:30 gate.
For a slower dinner that isn't organized around a show, Ellacoya Barn & Grill at 2667 Lake Shore Road sits right on the way home from the beach. Locals rotate between the seafood chowder, the steak tips, and the fish and chips, and the room itself is a working barn interior. On weekend nights there's usually live music.
For an in-and-out lake-day meal with kids, Sawyer's Dairy Bar is the answer everyone eventually comes back to. Same Sawyer's you'll see inside the pavilion, minus the show markup.
Two names worth keeping on a mental list: The Breeze on Lake Shore Road for the water views, and Ames Farm Inn if you want a breakfast that feels like the summer you remember.
Old Home Day is the closer
The single date to put on the family calendar is Saturday, August 29. The 2026 Old Home Day Celebration takes place Saturday, August 29th, 2026, with the parade, craft vendors, many events, and fireworks. It's run by Gilford Rec out of 47 Cherry Valley Road.
There is a scheduling collision worth flagging. The same Saturday night has a Zach Top show at the pavilion at 7:00 PM. If you're planning to catch the fireworks and you have people driving in from out of town, tell them to arrive by mid-afternoon or plan on a very slow crawl up 11B. Locals who want the fireworks without the traffic tend to walk or bike in from the neighborhoods off Cherry Valley and Belknap Mountain Road.

Everything you'd want to do in Gilford in August is available, but the operating windows are narrower than they were four weeks ago, the crowds are bigger, and the calendar starts overlapping itself in the final ten days.
